The water read · wooden pier + pacific beach sand

Target species

California halibut

Spring through summer on the sand outside the surf line. Live mackerel is the killer. 22-inch minimum, 5/day south of Pt Sur.

Calico bass + sand bass

Pier pilings hold calicos + sand bass year-round. Plastics on a leadhead, fished tight. 14-inch minimum, 5/day combined.

Pacific mackerel + bonito + jacksmelt

Off the end. Sabikis + surface iron. Mackerel makes excellent halibut bait.

Barred surf perch + yellowfin croaker + corbina

Sand sides year-round. Corbina sight-fishing at low tide in summer.

White seabass (spring window)

Grunion-run nights March through May. Live mackerel fly-lined or surface iron. 28-inch minimum, 1/day March 15 to June 15. Need a hoop net for landing from pier height.

Leopard shark + bat ray (after dark)

Big bait on bottom off the pier end. Leopard 36-inch minimum, 3/day.

Tactic notes

Wind exposure

SW + W wind blow the pier most afternoons. Mornings before 10 AM and after-dark are the productive windows.

Surf coexistence

Pacific Beach is a popular surf spot. Both sides of the pier have surfer activity. First light + after-dark are the cleanest fishing windows.

Tide stage

Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. Corbina at the bottom of outgoing through low slack. White seabass on slack high after dark during grunion runs.

Modes that work

Pier (main surface, lower deck), surf-fish (sand sides), kayak (PB sand launches in small surf). Boat launches at Mission Bay (5 min south).

Access
