Target species
California halibut
Sand flats inside the harbor + outside the jetty mouth. Drift live bait or slow-grind a swimbait. 22-inch minimum, 5 per day south of Pt Sur. See the species page.
Calico + sand bass
The jetty rocks hold calicos and sand bass year-round. Plastics on a leadhead, fished tight to the rocks. 14-inch minimum, 5 per day combined.
Surfperch + jacksmelt + smelt
Year-round on the jetties and inside-harbor docks. Light tackle, small bait hooks. Live smelt is excellent halibut bait if you can fill the bucket.
Pacific bonito (summer)
Summer-warm-water years bring bonito schools to the jetty mouth. Surface iron or feather jigs on a fast retrieve. No size limit, 10 per day combined with mackerel.
Channel Islands species (boat trips)
Multi-day trips to Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel. White seabass + yellowtail in spring + summer. Rockfish + lingcod when seasons are open. See the species pages: white seabass, yellowtail, rockfish, lingcod.
Tactic notes
Wind exposure
Inside-harbor stays fishable in most wind conditions. The jetty mouth gets choppy in 15+ kt NW. Boat trips frequently cancel for wind at the islands when buoy 46217 shows large waves.
Tide stage
Outgoing pushes bait out of the harbor + concentrates predators at the mouth. Incoming pushes warmer ocean water in. Slack tides are slow inside the harbor but productive at the jetty rocks.
Modes that work
Pier (Hueneme Pier 5 min south is a separate spot but the same water), boat-inshore + boat-offshore (sportfishing charters + private launches), kayak (productive inside the harbor + along the back side of the breakwater), spear (jetty rocks at slack water), surf-fish (Hollywood Beach + Silver Strand on either side of the harbor mouth).
