Ventura County · Municipal pier + sand
Ventura Pier
One of the longest wooden piers on the California coast. Reaches deep enough for halibut and the occasional pelagic. Sand sides hold perch and corbina year-round. The pier base sits in the bait flow off the Ventura River mouth, which concentrates bait + the predators that follow it. Walk-in spot, no boat needed, free public access.

Target species
California halibut
Spring through summer on the sand outside the surf line. Live mackerel (caught off the pier) is the killer bait. 22-inch sport minimum, 5 per day south of Pt Sur. Mid-flood through slack high is the productive window. See the species page.
Pacific mackerel + jacksmelt
Off the end of the pier year-round. Sabikis on a light rod. Live mackerel is the bridge bait for halibut + white seabass.
Barred surf perch + redtail perch + yellowfin croaker
Sand sides of the pier year-round. Sand crabs when running, mole crabs otherwise. No size or bag limit on perch; 10 per day combined on croaker species.
California corbina (summer)
Summer surf-line cruiser east of the pier. Sight-fish at low tide on flat sandy stretches. 17-inch minimum, 1 per day.
White seabass + leopard shark
White seabass on live mackerel fly-lined from the pier on spring grunion-run nights. Leopard sharks on big bait fished on bottom after dark. Both need a hoop net or long-handled gaff for landing from pier height.
Tactic notes
Wind exposure
NW wind blows the beach by 10 AM most spring and summer days. The pier itself shelters bait presentation but the sand-side fishing degrades fast. Mornings before 10 AM are the consistent window.
Ventura River mouth influence
The Ventura River mouth a few hundred yards north of the pier opens periodically (after storms, after dredging). When open, it pushes bait into the surf line and concentrates predators on the north side of the pier. Check river-mouth state before deciding which side of the pier to fish.
Tide stage
Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. White seabass on slack high after dark. Low tide opens corbina sight-fishing east of the pier.
Modes that work
Pier (main surface), surf-fish (sand sides), kayak (launch off the sand in small surf), fly (perch + corbina on the cobble at low tide east of the pier). Boat launches out of Ventura Harbor 5 min south.
Access
- Ventura Pier is free public access during the listed hours (typically 6 AM to 10 PM, check city posting).

What the GhostFingers Fish app adds
The page above is the snapshot. The app adds: live tide stage at Santa Barbara, SST at the east-Channel node, wind forecast through your morning window, Ventura River mouth state from SBCo creek-flow data (open vs closed influences the bite), halibut verdict tuned to the Channel SST band, leopard shark night-bite tier driven by tide + lunar phase, and the pattern dashboard that learns your best Ventura Pier sessions.
Ventura Pier verdict, river-mouth state baked in.
The verdict knows whether the river mouth is pushing bait into the pier zone.
