Target species

Barred surf perch

Year-round on the cobble bands. Sand crabs on light line. Low tide opens the productive troughs between cobble. No size or bag limit. See the species page.

California halibut

Sand pockets between boulder fields hold halibut spring through summer. Drift live anchovy or smelt on a Carolina rig. 22-inch minimum, 5 per day south of Pt Sur.

Calico bass

Boulder structure at Mussel Shoals holds small calicos. Plastics on a leadhead, fished tight to the structure. 14-inch minimum, 5 per day combined.

White seabass (spring window)

Grunion-run nights March through May. Live squid or surface iron after dark on the cobble. 28-inch minimum, 1 per day March 15 to June 15.

Leopard shark + bat ray (after dark)

Big bait on heavy gear outside the surf line. Leopard shark 36-inch minimum, 3 per day. Bat rays released.

Tactic notes

Wind exposure

West and NW wind blow the stretch by mid-morning. Mornings before 9 AM are the reliable window.

Tide stage

Low tide opens the cobble bands for perch fishing. Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. Calico hold through tide changes if the boulder structure is healthy.

Swell + safety

Big swell (6+ feet) makes boulder fishing dangerous — the boulders get hit hard and the rebound surge sweeps anglers off. When in doubt, sit it out. Faria's sand stretches are safer in moderate swell than the boulder clusters.

Modes that work

Surf-fish (cobble bands + sand pockets), spear (boulder clusters at slack water, swell-permitting), fly (perch on cobble at low tide). Kayak launch is committing through the surf.

What the GhostFingers Fish app adds

The page above is the snapshot. The app adds: live tide stage at Santa Barbara, current SST in the east SB Channel, wind forecast through your morning window, swell-safety verdict that flags the stretch unfishable when NDBC 46218 shows big NW swell, halibut sand-pocket tier, and the pattern dashboard that learns your best Faria sessions.

Faria verdict with the boulder-swell-safety math built in.

Verdict flags unsafe-swell windows so you don't get caught off-guard on the boulder fields.
