LA County · Municipal pier + sand
Malibu Pier
Historic state-park pier next to the famous Surfrider Beach. Sand bottom holds halibut spring through summer. Perch and corbina on the sand sides. Mackerel and jacksmelt off the end. The Malibu Creek mouth at the east end of the surf adds an estuary-influence variable. Shared water with surfers. Fishing happens at first light or when surf is small.
Target species
California halibut
Spring through summer on the sand outside the surf line. Live mackerel (off the pier) is the killer bait. 22-inch minimum, 5 per day south of Pt Sur. Mid-flood through slack high.
Pacific mackerel + jacksmelt + bonito
Pelagics off the end of the pier. Sabikis for mackerel + jacksmelt. Surface iron for bonito when they push in on warm-water days. No size limit, 10/day combined.
Barred surf perch + corbina
Sand sides of the pier year-round. Sand crabs on light line. Corbina in the surf line east of the pier in summer at low tide.
Calico bass (small)
Small calicos at the pier pilings. Plastics on a leadhead. 14-inch minimum, 5/day combined.
Yellowtail + white seabass (rare summer)
Warm-water summer years occasionally bring pelagics to the pier zone. Long-shot but worth being ready when SST climbs above 68°F in the Bay.
Tactic notes
Surfrider Beach coexistence ethic
Malibu Pier sits right next to Surfrider, one of LA's premier surf breaks. Surfers have right of way in the lineup. Productive fishing windows: first light before surfers arrive, flat days when surf is below 2 feet, or after sunset. Casting through a lineup is dangerous + disrespectful. Move down the beach away from the lineup if needed.
Malibu Creek mouth influence
The creek mouth at the east end of Surfrider opens periodically after winter storms. When open, it flushes bait into the surf line and can concentrate predators east of the pier. Worth checking the creek mouth state.
Tide stage
Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. Low tide opens corbina sight-fishing east. Mackerel + bonito hit through tide changes.
Wind exposure
West and SW wind common in the afternoons. Mornings before 10 AM are the productive window.
Modes that work
Pier (main surface), surf-fish (sand sides, with surf coexistence), kayak (launches off the sand), fly (perch + corbina on the cobble bands east). Boat launches out of King Harbor (45 min south).
