LA County · Concrete pier + Santa Monica Bay sand
Manhattan Beach Pier
Iconic concrete pier with the Roundhouse aquarium at the end. South Bay's classic shore-fishing staple. Halibut on the sand outside the surf line, perch and croaker on the sand sides, mackerel and bonito off the end, leopard sharks and bat rays after dark. The pier reaches enough depth for the occasional white seabass on warm-water nights.

Target species
California halibut
Spring through summer on the sand outside the surf line. Live mackerel (off the pier) is the killer bait. 22-inch minimum, 5/day south of Pt Sur. Mid-flood through slack high.
Pacific mackerel + bonito + jacksmelt
Off the end of the pier. Sabikis for the small bait, surface iron for bonito when they push in. Mackerel bait the killer for halibut + white seabass when fresh.
Barred surf perch + yellowfin + spotfin croaker
Sand sides year-round. Sand crabs + mole crabs on Carolina rig. Croaker 10/day combined, perch no limit.
Leopard shark + bat ray (after dark)
Big bait fished on bottom off the pier end. Leopard shark 36-inch minimum, 3/day. Bat rays released. Bring a long-handled tool for hook removal from pier height.
White seabass (rare summer night)
Long-shot pier target in warm-water summers. Live mackerel fly-lined from the pier end. 28-inch minimum, 1/day March 15 to June 15. Hoop net required for landing.
Tactic notes
Wind exposure
West and SW wind blows the pier most afternoons. Mornings before 10 AM and evenings after 7 PM are the consistent windows. Onshore wind makes pier presentation difficult.
Tide stage
Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. White seabass on slack high after dark. Sharks + rays come on the rising tide after sunset.
Swell
W swell wraps into the Bay. Big winter swell (8+ feet) makes the lower pier deck wet. South swell wraps in summer, generally manageable.
Crowd note
Manhattan Beach Pier is one of the most heavily-trafficked piers in California for non-fishing visitors. Weekday mornings and after-dark are quieter. Weekend midday is shoulder-to-shoulder.
Modes that work
Pier (main surface), surf-fish (sand sides), kayak (launches off the sand in small surf). Boat launches at King Harbor (10 min south).
Access
- Manhattan Beach Pier is free public access during the listed hours.
- Metered parking on the strand promenade. Fills early on weekends.
- Restrooms at the pier base.
- Closest tackle shop: Sav-On Tackle in Hermosa Beach (5 min south), or Bay Tackle in Marina del Rey (15 min north).
- Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the pier is a marine education stop, not fishing-related.

The page above is the snapshot. The app adds: live tide stage at LA, current SST in the Bay, wind forecast factoring South Bay onshore patterns, halibut verdict tuned to the Bay's typical 60-66°F productive band, leopard shark night-bite tier driven by tide + lunar phase, and the seasonal pelagic alert for the bonito + mackerel summer windows.
