LA County · Horseshoe pier + King Harbor
Redondo Sportfishing Pier
Horseshoe-shaped pier at the south end of King Harbor, attached to Redondo Beach Sportfishing landing. The pier wraps around an open-water lagoon that holds bait year-round, which means bigger fish hold here too. Halibut on the sand outside, bonito + mackerel through the summer, calico on the breakwater rocks, white seabass on spring grunion nights. Bait shop, tackle, charter trips all on-site.
Target species
California halibut
Sand outside the breakwater + inside the harbor flats. Spring through summer. Live mackerel is the killer. 22-inch minimum, 5/day south of Pt Sur.
Calico bass + sand bass
The breakwater rocks hold calicos and sand bass year-round. Plastics on a leadhead, fished tight to the rocks. 14-inch minimum, 5/day combined.
Pacific bonito + mackerel
Bonito push in on warm-water summers. Surface iron + feathers + sabikis for mackerel. Live mackerel is the bridge bait.
White seabass (spring window)
Spring grunion-run nights March through May on the open-water beach south of the harbor. Live squid or surface iron. 28-inch minimum, 1/day March 15 to June 15.
Perch + jacksmelt + halfmoon
Year-round on the pier rails and inside-harbor docks. Light tackle, small hooks.
Tactic notes
Wind exposure
The horseshoe geometry shelters the inside-pier lagoon from most wind. Outside the breakwater gets exposed to west swell + W/SW wind. Inside-pier fishable in conditions that blow out adjacent piers.
Tide stage
Mid-flood through slack high for halibut. Outgoing pulls bait out of the harbor + concentrates predators at the harbor mouth.
Modes that work
Pier (main surface), boat-inshore + boat-offshore (charter + private launches at King Harbor public boat ramp), kayak (launches inside the harbor, excellent for getting to the breakwater rocks), surf-fish (Torrance Beach south of the harbor), spear (breakwater rocks at slack water).
